Food Myth #1 – Eating Salads is good for you!

WHAT!!!  A myth…come on Jim, get real.  Ok, I will admit that a salad in and of itself isn’t all that bad for you.  Provided that the salad includes lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, maybe some bell peppers or some onions…The “regular” house salad is GREAT for you!  The problem is that today, in America, the ability to get a simple house salad is almost gone.

You see restaurants a few years ago realized that salads are money makers.  They advertise them as super healthy and in some cases this couldn’t be farther from the truth.  We have ruined the good old fashioned salad by adding layer upon layer of crap that just doesn’t need to be there.  Get ready be amazed…..

Bruschetta Chicken Salad, Regular portion….has 1,110 calories…ONE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND TEN CALORIES!  Holy S^%T!  What is ON this thing…oh and to make matters worse is has 66 grams of fat (18 of which are saturated) and are you ready for this…3,100 mg of sodium….

Oriental Chicken Salad, Regular portion…sounds healthy enough.  Sadly, its not 😦  1, 290 calories, 79 grams of fat and 2,290 mg of sodium…this salad is not what the Dr. ordered.

Certainly the Apple Walnut Chicken Salad would be better…right?  Wrong!  1,030 calories, 67 grams of fat and 1,700 mg of sodium….but it’s got apples in it?  WTF!

But those aren’t even close to the artery clogging salad that is coming next…

The Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad…oh ya!!!!!  1,350 calories with a whopping EIGHTY grams of FAT and 2,610 mg of Sodium.

These are just a few examples and yes I picked on Applebees…oh and by the way, most of the other salads there aren’t much better but do range in the 800 to 1000 calorie threshold.  You are better off eating a McDonalds Big Mac…and I am not joking either…A Big Mac has a mere 540 calories and only 29 grams of fat compared to the leafy green monsters above.  Hell you can eat 2 if you want!

This just goes to show what marketing and FALSE advertising have done to our society.  We think salad and mostly we think healthy when in a LOT of cases this is furthest thing from the truth.  Another classic case of salads going bad is the whole salad dressing stuff that we ruin our salads with.  Here is some info for ya….

Ranch Dressing varies by brands but averages out to about 74 calories and 8 grams of fat per Tablespoon.  I know of NO ONE who only puts 1 tablespoon of ranch on a salad…

What about those fat free Ranch Dressings…better but not by much…most average around 30 calories per tablespoon but the added sugars and sodium pretty much wash away the benefits.

With the exception of oil and vinegar, none are that much better.  I am not saying you need to eat your salad plain, just use some common sense.  The keys to eating right is to know what your eating.  Do your research and then plan accordingly.

    Totally agree,

    People tend to forget to read menus properly and when they see ‘salad’ they think their getting healthy nutritious food when in reality there more likely getting dressing heavy crouton loafed bacon biting disasters waiting to happen.

    Funny the initial salad you mentioned is something similar to what I make for my lunches:

    Crisp iceberg lettuce, tomato, peppers, spring onion, jalopenos, piri piri chillies, cucumber topped with a table spoon of an optimum oil blend and/or a table spoon of ground flaxseed.

    Top that with grilled chicken or turkey or tuna and im all set 🙂
