Still want to keep drinking soda?

Read a study last night that really brought everything home for me with regards to soda (or pop)…Yes I still drink it now and then, but I might just be making some changes here and I hope you will as well.

Did you know that Americans drink on average 44.7 gallons of this stuff….That is every single American living.  Now, not every American drinks soda so I would say the average is probably much higher.  Here is where it gets scary..

Fact #1 – Drinking NON Diet Soda leads to a dramatic in reese in very dangerous and hard-to-detect fats.  Not the fats you are able to feel under your skin, but rather the fats that hand out inside your body.  After a study completed by Danish researchers who had participants drink either regular soda, diet soda, milk or water every day for 6 months the total fat mass remained basically the same across the board for all participants.  However, those that drank the regular soda had a sharp increase in dangerous hidden fats including liver fat and skeletal fat.  The regular soda group also experienced an 11 percent increase in cholesterol compared to the other groups.  Think Diet Soda is better?  Not by a mile.  Artificial sweeteners and food dyes have been linked brain cell damage and hyperactivity not to mention that ongoing research is indicating that those who drink diet soda have a higher risk of developing diabetes.  Did you know that the average American DRINKS 450 calories per day….it is no wonder we have an obesity epidemic in our country.

REALLY scary Fact #2 – There are quite few popular soda brands (I am not going to name names here) that include in their ingredients a compound called brominated vegetable oil….this is a TOXIC FLAME RETARDANT!!!!  They use this to keep the artificial flavorings from separating from the rest of the liquid.  It is often listed as BVO on soda’s and sports drinks.  This can lead to bromide poisoning symptoms over time including lesions and memory loss, as well as nerve disorders.

INCREDIBLY scary Fact #3 – All those artificial sweeteners that all of eat….ya, well the problem here is that they have only been in our food chain since the 1990’s and the long term health impacts are unknown because….ready for this…..the corporations that developed these sweeteners never had to test them for any long term safety.  We are just now starting to find that artificial sweeteners are being linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated aging and even infertility!  As the years progress along, I have no doubt that these ongoing studies will conclusively link these additives to even more harmful effects.  Remember when everyone used to smoke….well for many years no one ever said anything bad about it or its harmful affects either…until 1964 when the Surgeon General stated that smoking was harmful to you.  It only took about 40 years for everyone to come to the conclusion that smoking was harmful….I wonder how long it will take with regards to these artificial sweeteners.

  1. Yikes!!! I am glad we don’t drink and of the above mentioned drinks. We are water, tea and juice (not juice cocktail) drinkers…and some beers now and again. Thanks for sharing this!!!

  2. I recently found out there’s actually antifreeze in some salad dressings and drinks. It’s propylene glycol and is also used to make plastic hard. Amazing what’s in “food” these days. Several don’t have any real food in them, just artificial ingredients and chemical cocktails.
