Can we still lose weight and drink alcohol? Absolutely! Provided you are doing so in serious moderation. There is NO room in a weight loss plan for heavy drinking. There are even many benefits to having a glass of wine or a single drink on a daily basis. The problem lies when we have MORE than that single drink. It is NOT even the calories that tend to affect us most negatively.
Alcohol is metabolized completely different than other foods and other beverages. Normally, our bodies get energy from the calories in carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The digestive process is slow when you are eating or drinking non alcoholic foods. When alcohol is introduced, everything changes! When we drink alcohol, it gets immediate attention simply because the body see’s alcohol as a toxin and it needs no digestion.
Regardless of whether you have eaten before you drink or not, the alcohol will always take priority. Now that said, food can and will help eliminate some of the nasty side affects of alcohol with regards to vision, speech, reasoning and judgement but when our bodies are completely focused on processing the alcohol in our systems it is unable to properly break down foods containing vital nutrients our bodies need. Therefore, these calories are converted into body fat and are carried away for permanent storage on your body.
Alcohol also impairs judgement. We tend to eat significantly more and much worse foods after we have had a few drinks or a few beers. So now you have a toxin in your body that your body is doing everything it can to remove and you have added extra calories that your body cannot process because it is to busy processing the alcohol. Do you see where this can and will be a lose/lose situation?
So, in the end, I am not sitting here telling you that you can’t or shouldn’t drink. Go for it, from time to time and do so in absolute moderation. Moderation is about 1 drink and hour 🙂
