Benefits of good old fashioned H2O

A little over 24 hours ago I asked all of our participants in our Fit 4 Life 30 Day Challenge participants to drink half of their body weight in water over the next 24 hours.  This was a little task just gauge a few things.  The requirements were to 1) Agree to do the 24 hour water challenge 2) Post your results.  Pretty simple.  Yet for some, drinking and adequate amount of water each day is a huge challenge.  Many of our participants today probably drank more water over the last 24 hours than they ever have…for some however, this was not a challenge at all.  So why start with water?

Our bodies are 60% water and without enough water many negative things can happen to our bodies.  From dehydration to muscle fatigue to constipation and everything in between.  Let’s take a look at 6 health benefits to drinking enough water.

#1 – Water keeps you young!  Who doesn’t want to look and feel younger.  When our bodies are properly hydrated our skin is significantly less dry, wrinkles can often times completely disappear.

#2 – Drinking water actually does help you lose weight.  No it is not some super awesome magic potion that is going to just allow you through all your excess weight off.  Water acts as a natural appetite suppressant.  Pretty dang cool there.  You will also feel less bloated because if you body is getting the water it needs, it will not attempt to retain water.

#3 – Drinking water helps build muscle…and in turn with added muscle you end up burning a few extra calories per day because your muscles require a LOT more energy to function.  It has been studied over and over again but adding 1 pound of muscle will allow you to increase your caloric burn by up to 50 calories per day!!  PER DAY.  Doesn’t sound like a lot…365 days times 50 = 18,250 extra calories per year. You don’t need to be or look like a body builder however by drinking enough water, which carries oxygen to your muscles they will be able to work harder and longer and in turn get stronger which will end up allowing you to gain lean muscle mass.

#4 – Drinking water makes you smarter 🙂  It is quite simple.  Your brain need oxygen to thrive.  Oxygen is carried throughout your body by….you guessed it water.  In some studies, staying properly hydrated has improved cognitive function by 30%

#5 – Your joints…it is all about lubrication here.  Keeping those tendons and ligaments strong is absolutely vital to continues success.

So why start the challenge off with water?  Because this is the most basic and fundamental thing we can do.  We can and will build on this from here.  Congratulations to every one who complete the first SNAPSHOT challenge.
